TWIRLS

2023 - CURRENT

Twirls
is a sound installation and performance that consist of a pool in which rotating bowls are moved by the stream of air and are playable by the audience. Underwater microphones are placed to echo the sounds produced by the pool's movements. The piece is completed by two video installations hidden inside clay corals depicting trance-inducing twirling dance sequences. The pool is activated by a performance using a conch horn, a cell-phone and an abstract dance that together form and break energy streams and circular continuity.

Developed during residency at C3, Milan, January 2023

YOU WILL SEE ME WHENEVER YOU WISH
TO MEET ME (Aquatic Fantasy Ballet)

Francesca Mariano & Siet Phorae

2022 - CURRENT

Read full review: https://not.neroeditions.com/il-flusso-corporeo-della-fantasia/

An enchanting dance and sound performance, in which Francesca Mariano and Siet Phorae move like archaeologists and swimmers with a mythological aura. Or as if they were Ondine, figures far more fairy-tale-like than the Sirens, but holders of as much hidden knowledge, locked into the musical language of which they are masters.

THE BUBBLE CHOIR

2023

PERFORMED AT TERME DI SEGESTA / FREE THERMAL BATHS OF SEGESTA (SICILY) 9 AUGUST 2023
CONCEIVED BY FRANCESCA HEART

The Bubble Choir is a constellation of entities communicating between each other through sound. An improvisation practice in listening and responding, allowing the body to be informed by the water element in which the musicians are half-absorbed in. Emerging from the water as a collective other-body. The Bubble Choir was conceived as a response to the painting ‘Les Plaiedes’, a constellation depicted as women, in the astrological manuscript "Leiden Aratea" of the 9th century. The myth narrates that the seven sisters were water nymphs who were transformed into doves and ultimately into stars in order to escape Orion.

ARCHAEO CHOREOLOGY

2018 - CURRENT

Archaeo Choreology is an on-going research project founded and curated by Francesca Mariano, which invites participants to study movement beyond the boundaries of what we believe dance is. It investigates individual and collective movement expression in relation to landscape, language and to the challenges posed by today’s digitalized world.
Archaeo-Choreology starts with anatomy and memory to blossom into myth and ritual. The program is enriched by the contribution from artists and researchers in the fields of sound, bodywork, architecture, esotericism, choreography and more.

Archaeo Choreology is supported by Combo

WATER INFO TRANSMISSION

2019 -2022

Water Info Transmission is a performative workshop employing phone audio recordings and ritualized gestures from a hydrofeminist perspective. Happening near bodies of water or somewhere in the ocean of internet, the project encourages collective sharing of vulnerability in order to create new myths and narratives that explore oceanic imagination, renewal and ecological sensitivity. Each workshop results in an instant sound photography of the landscape co-created by the participants.

Presented at
Palermo Living Pavilion, IKLEKTIK London, Nextones, University of California Santa Barbara
